The SLC Group Hosts Its First Career Day to Inspire Future Professionals
The SLC Group hosted its very first Career Day on Thursday, the 17th of July. The event took place on-site, located just outside Sasolburg.
It was attended by learners and their parents from local schools in the Vaal Triangle area. Learners from numerous schools, including Sasolburg High, Transvalia, Affies Sasolburg, and Gimnasium Vereeniging, attended the day.
The SLC Group consists of four companies: The Synthetic Latex Company, Valor Chemicals, Simultec, and The Shared Services Company. Employees from all four companies participated in the day’s activities, sharing insights into their daily roles, the study fields related to those roles, and the broader functions of the organization. During the site tour, learners had the opportunity to see how the laboratory operates, observe maintenance machinery in action, and learn about warehouse operations and logistics. They even got a glimpse of the control room and how latex is manufactured. The tour also included visits to the training centre and the on-site occupational health clinic.
The day began with an induction session, where visitors were introduced to the site’s safety procedures and the health risks. Following this, a series of talks were presented by employees covering a wide range of career fields, including Operations, Health and Safety, Logistics, Maintenance, Research & Development, Process Technical, Quality Control, Buying, Procurement, Finance, and Marketing. These sessions were designed to give learners insight into the diverse career opportunities available.
After a quick lunch break, visitors were divided into smaller groups and taken on guided tours of the plant, where they explored the inner workings of the facility. From the laboratory and training centre to the warehouse and control room, learners got a rare, close-up view of real-world operations.
The CEO of the SLC Group, Quentin van den Heever, stated, “Hosting career days like this is crucial for igniting the spark of curiosity in young minds, unveiling the vast possibilities in the workplace, and inspiring a new generation of scientists and innovators to embark on exciting careers that will shape our future.”
“It was a privilege for me as a Minister in Sasolburg to bring four members of our community. We are glad that the community works towards helping guide our youth. I would also like to thank SLC Group for this day,” said Ds Josef Steurer.
The parent of another learner, Ananda Le Grange, said, “It was an awesome day, and I wish I had a career day like this when I was in school.”
One of the learners, Tsebo Moloi, said, “It was cool. I got to see all the equipment, and I enjoyed the mechanical part of the tour the most. I want to one day become a fitter.”
With the day being a huge success, the SLC Group will now look at hosting more career days in the future.
